AI doesn't create new governance problems. It just makes the old ones load-bearing.

For years, an ungoverned dashboard or a stale table was a nuisance. Someone would eventually notice, question it, or quietly stop trusting it. That self-correction loop disappears the moment Genie or Copilot sits on top of the same data. Now a stale table doesn't produce a nuisance, it produces a confident, plain-English answer that a VP repeats in a meeting.

The uncomfortable part: most teams can't yet answer basic questions about their own AI layer. What was asked. Which tables it touched. Whether the answer was built on something current. That's not a Databricks problem specifically, it's a visibility problem that existed before AI and simply wasn't urgent yet. Databricks just happens to be where it's showing up first, because Genie puts plain-English answers directly on top of Unity Catalog, with nothing watching what goes in or comes out.

Nobody could say with confidence who had access to what.

76,180 access grants reviewed. 16,802 flagged as cross-affiliate. Datalogz Control Tower narrowed that down to 2,953 grants representing genuine regulated-data exposure, an 82% reduction in what compliance actually needed to investigate.

Time to complete: under 8 hours. A manual review would have taken an estimated 2,540 hours.

Most cross-affiliate access is legitimate. The small percentage that isn't is where the audit finding lives.
